Something of a Gene Bilbrew masterpiece, this illustration was the cover of the hard-boiled soft-core book Come-On Girl created by Edward Mishkin in the late 1950s. There is no date, but copies of Come-On Girl were confiscated in an obscenity bust in Milwaukee in 1957. It is a Top notch example of Mishkin’s product, most of which has never been seen by anyone outside of a few patrons of 42nd Street in the 1950s. The digest sized book contains 5 Bilbrew illustrations, several more by Eric Stanton and a handful of photographs including one of Bettie Page. All the illustrations are top of the line…both Bilbrew and Stanton were doing their finest work at this time, and that they have not been seen for over 50 years is unfortunate.
The book consists of two short stories. Come-On Girl is by Claire Haile and Volupte by Walter Green. A scarce book and one which will be included in the forthcoming book TIMES SQUARE SMUT which will reproduce dozens of the books Mishkin printed in the early 1950s and for which he was arrested in a case which went to the Supreme Court. Stay tuned to Vintage Sleaze for the status of the book. It will be several hundred pages with as many illustrations.
